The fire fighting, dubstep rockin’, festival going prince of the Universe

by Mitch on August 11, 2010

It’s been a while since my last post because I’ve been out of province and away from the interweb to attend the most amazing festival in the world, the Shambhala Music Festival in Salmo, British Columbia.

It was my second year at Shambhala and it was every bit as amazing as it was last year, but I’ll write more on that in my upcoming posts. I’ll be posting a complete overview of my Shambhala experience in about a week, but for now I just wanted to let everyone know that I’m not dead and I haven’t ditched this website — I’ve just been off on holidays for a bit and now that I’ve returned I have only today to recoop before going back to work in the morning for a 5 day stretch of 12 hour shifts — ugh.

Attending festivals, fighting fires, rockin’ the dubstep

Shortly after pulling in to Saskatoon and dropping off one of my fellow festival goers at his home at around 4:30am this morning, a strange event took place.

It really made me think about how perfectly the Universe works sometimes — if we had not gone to Shambhala, if we had not left to come home when we did, made all the stops we did on the 15 hour trip home, or dropped off my friend at his home at the exact time that we did, we would not have been there to save a strangers garage/home/trailer from burning down.

After dropping off my friend we drove past a back alley in which I spotted a small utility trailer in flames behind a garage and under a huge tree which was also starting to catch fire.

When I saw the flames I slammed on the brakes, popped the car in reverse and backed up to make sure I had actually seen what I thought I saw. Neither my sister or my girlfriend noticed the flaming trailer but it definitely stuck out to me. When we had confirmed that the trailer was indeed going up in flames we immediately stopped the car, got out and ran to the house to wake up the people inside.

Nobody answered the door at first, it was 4:30 in the morning after all, and everyone was probably sleeping. We ran into the back yard and continued banging on the doors until finally a tired old man answered the door in his bath robe.

I think the man was scared of us at first, he probably thought we were trying to rob him or something, but after explaining to him a couple times that his trailer was on fire and it was about to start his garage and tree on fire, he thanked us and called the fire department.

We waited as he was on the phone with the emergency operators and they sent the police and fire truck to his house — they all arrived in less than 5 minutes and had the fire extinguished before the garage and tree took any damage. Only the utility trailer took some damage, and by the looks of it the trailer wasn’t even damaged a whole lot, just the stuff inside had been melted and charred.

We gave a quick statement to the police and they hurried off looking for an arson suspect in the area. The fire couldn’t have been going for much more than 5-10 minutes when we arrived on the scene to save the day.

We didn’t see anyone in the area, but it had definitely been intentional by the looks of things.

Isn’t it amazing how the Universe works sometimes? If the timing of our trip had been different by even just a few minutes that man would have lost his trailer, his garage, his beautiful big tree, and possibly his house and/or life!

I feel so happy to have been able to help a complete stranger like that — knowing that because of our willingness to stop and take action in the moment we saved an old man a lot of trouble and maybe even his life makes me feel good inside and like we were meant to be there at that time at that place.

A perfect example of how the Universe has things organized in ways that we can’t consciously comprehend — what a day!

Anyway, I just wanted to put up a quick post about that experience and let everyone know that I’ll be back in full force with tons of great new posts in about a week or so.

:)
