As I have been writing about in my other back pain posts, I’ve been meaning to do a 30 day trial of the Healthy Back Institute’s Lose The Back Pain System. I bought their system a little over a month ago to be used in conjunction with the Nubax Trio spinal decompression unit that I bought about 6 months ago. To read my complete review of the Nubax Trio, click here.
The Lose The Back Pain System is one of the top rated programs out there to eliminate back pain, sciatica, herniated and bulging discs.
The program is divided into 3 phases:
- Education
- Self-Assessment
- Treatment
I went through the education portion of the program right after I downloaded it. I found it quite informative and gave me a new way to look at what was causing my pain. The education part is crucial to understanding what is causing the pain, what muscle balance therapy is, and why muscle balance therapy can fix your back pain, no matter what your diagnosed condition is (sciatica, herniated disc, bulging disc, etc).
In the education portion of the program I learned all about muscle imbalances, how they develop, and what to do about them. I knew after I went through this first part that the program is probably just what I need to fix my back. It makes perfect sense, logically.
It took many days of procrastination but I finally got around to doing all of the assessments and going through all of the manuals and workbooks that come with the system. The assessments helped me determine that I have a backward tilted pelvis, not a forward tipped pelvis like I had suspected, and a high hip on my right side.
Doing the assessments took me about 45 minutes in total, and I did them by myself. I had been waiting for someone to be free and want to help me do the assessments, but relying on other people was putting it off for far too long, so I just sucked it up and did the assessments on my own. This was really not a big deal, I thought that having someone help would make it better or more accurate, but it turns out that you can do these assessments by yourself quite easily.
The self assessment portion of the program is easy to follow and is very straightforward. The assessments consist of a series of simple physical tests which help you identify what your dysfunctions are, and further more, the specific muscle imbalances that cause the dysfunction. The tests go by fairly quickly on the Lose The Back Pain video, so you have to pause it while you do each one.
You can mark down on the included worksheet or just write on a blank sheet of paper for future reference which muscles are tight and which are weak, what your dysfunctions are, and any additional notes or information you discover while doing the self assessment tests.
After I finished the entire self assessment I had a list of information to aid me in correcting my muscle imbalances and curing my back pain and sciatica.
Muscle balance therapy
I then moved on to the 3rd and final part of the system, the treatment portion of the program. This portion consists of specific stretches and exercises to strengthen weak muscles and stretch tight ones.
The particular exercises and stretches that I have to do will be completely different from those that someone with else using this system might end up with because the whole system is designed to help you identify your specific imbalances and then come up with a tailored solution that addresses your specific dysfunctions. It’s not a generic exercise routine or group of stretches, the Lose The Back Pain system gives you a personalized set of targeted movements to bring your muscle groups back into balance, depending on your condition(s). Yes, it’s possible to have 2 or more problems that you have to address — I have two dysfunctions myself, the backward tipped pelvis, and the high hip on the right side.
Most of the exercises and stretches that are assigned to correct my specific dysfunctions are new to me. I have to do about 10 different ‘movements’ for my two conditions. I think there were 5 for each of my dysfunctions. I only knew a few of them and when I did them in the past I was doing them for both sides, which wasn’t fixing my imbalances. Certain movements are only done on one side to restore balance to the muscle groups that are out of balance.
I know after trying the exercises and stretches that these are very targeted to my condition. Each movement and stretch is felt in what feels like the right spot to me. It’s stretching certain muscles that feel like they need to be stretched, but before going through the Lose The Back Pain program I hadn’t known how to stretch them.
Muscle imbalances
I know I have some muscle imbalances from my days as a kickboxer when I was younger. I had kickboxed for about 3 years when I hurt my back at work over 5 years ago. When I injured my back, the muscle imbalances caused my injury to heal improperly — my hips and back were being pulled out of alignment by muscle groups that were out of balance.
We worked our abs a lot, and our hamstrings for kicking, but quads and lower back muscles were neglected. I had tight glutes and hamstrings which pull the back of my pelvis downwards, and tight abs which pulled the front of my pelvis upward while I was healing from my injury. This has led to my backward tipped pelvis.
Muscle imbalances are almost always the root cause of problems like herniation, bulging, and sciatica. It makes perfect sense when you really look at how the body works. Now it’s time for me to reverse all those years of building imbalanced muscle groups by working and stretching the opposite muscles to bring everything back into balance. Doing this should make the pain go away, but it might take time — it took years to build the imbalance, I just hope it doesn’t take as long to correct it.
Why don’t they know?
It’s absolutely amazing that more doctors, chiropractors, and physical therapists don’t use this method for their back patients. I do believe that it’s gaining popularity among professionals though, they report on their website that more and more doctors and therapists are incorporating this exact system into their treatment regimens for back pain patients. It’s good to know that maybe one day there will be a better understanding of what actually causes back pain and how it should be treated — but for now, this system still remains largely unknown to back pain patients and professionals alike.
30 day trial
Today will mark the first day of my 30 day commitment to the Lose The Back Pain program. I say it’s a 30 day commitment because it’s much easier and more achievable to make a 30 day commitment when trying to kick off a new daily habit. I explain why in this post, Change your life in 30 days.
I will go through all of the assigned exercises and stretches every day for at least 30 days. After 30 days of using the program I will re-evaluate it and review it here on the website. If I feel good about the system after 30 days, I will likely continue with it, but for now I am going to focus on getting through the next 30 days without missing a day.
In 30 days I will know for sure whether the Lose The Back Pain system really works, or if I’m hooped.
I will also be using the Nubax Trio for spinal decompression throughout the entire 30 day trial. I will be using it 1 or 2 times per day for 2 minutes at a time, after the assigned exercises and stretches, and before going to bed.
I will post progress reports if I feel like I have anything useful to share throughout the 30 day trial, if you’re not interested in my back pain posts you can safely skip those posts — they’ll be easily identified by their titles.
