Raw Food Diet, Days 18 & 19: Feelin’ the raw love again

by Mitch on April 20, 2010

Another combined post for days 18 and 19 this time since I don’t have a whole lot of new information to report right now I figured I might as well just do another combined report.

I feel great still and my energy levels remain at a constant high while eating only raw. I’m sure my body loves me lately.

I wish I had some pH test strips so I could check what the pH of my urine is at. I think that would be an interesting tid-bit of information to add to the trial. I would suspect that my pH level has gone up substantially since I started the 30 days raw. I’ll probably write an article about the benefits of alkalizing your body after the raw food trial is over in May.

On day 18 I ate:

  • 300g raspberries
  • 300g Dole salad & 1 apple
  • 2lb strawberries
  • 2 kiwis & 1 apple
  • Costco salad (454g) & 2 mandarins
  • 50g peanuts

Day 18 went well and my cravings started to subside. I think that having cheated on Friday actually helped deal with the cravings. Now on day 20 it’s starting to seem pretty easy to stick to this diet again. I keep thinking “I’ve only got one more week left! This is going to be too easy!”.  If you’re planning on doing a trial like this yourself and you think you might have trouble sticking to it through the entire 30 days maybe you should schedule yourself a day to cheat and eat your favorite non raw foods. This might give you the motivation you need to make it through the first 2 weeks, and after the first two weeks are done you’ve only got 2 more to go! I think that approach may be helpful for someone like myself who came off of a fairly Standard American Diet (SAD). I sort of began to prepare for this diet over the two months leading up to the actual trial by increasing the number of fresh fruits and veggies I was eating, but for the most part I just jumped right in and said “I’m going to do this!”. Doing this is a radical shift happening all at once and can be hard to deal with, so a scheduled cheat day may help keep some people on track.

On day 19 I ate:

  • 1 banana
  • 520 g fresh vegetarian sushi
  • 300g Dole premixed salad & 1 mandarin

I went to bed early on day 19 so I didn’t need to eat a whole lot. I got an early start on day 20 because it’s my favorite religious holiday (4/20) and I wanted to get a head start. ;)

Overall both days 18 and 19 were both good days with low cravings, no detox side effects, and high energy. I like the way this diet makes me feel but I am getting bored with the food. I think that once this trial is over I will continue eating a large quantity of raw foods. I will probably eat raw 4 out of 7 days per week on average. I want to keep the majority of my diet raw since the benefits of doing so are great!

I mentioned in the previous post that I don’t have any decent appliances to make the 30 days raw food challenge easier. I decided I needed to have at least a few decent raw food appliances so I ordered myself a brand new Vitamix 5200 off of eBay. I got a pretty good deal and the Vitamix is brand new. The 5200 model has enough blending power to break down the cell walls of fruits and veggies. It will demolish seeds, leafy greens, ice, and pretty much anything you put into it. I’m really looking forward to it’s arrival, although it probably won’t be here by the time the 30 days are up. The Vitamix will still get put to good use for all sorts of applications. If you’ve never seen a Vitamix you should check out the Vitamix website to see what it’s all about. I also found Vitamix’s affiliate program, so once I have thoroughly tested the machine I will likely be adding the Vitamix as a recommended product. I’ve never found a bad review of one so I am pretty sure it will come highly recommended by me as well.

Have you tried adding spices to your fruits? like nutmeg or fresh mint or ginger. Salads are always salads but you can go from a spinach salad with strawberries and a sweet dressing to a romaine salad with garlic, nuts, and a tangy dressing or switch to a greek salad minus the feta. If you switch it up all the time you won’t get bored, like any person with a SAD you probably only had a certain amount of staple meals anyway with the odd one out here and there. Try blending apples and making raw applesauce, even the change in texture will help. Or juice something and make popsicles, it’ll tast the same as usual but having a different way to eat it will alleviate some boredom. Hell, you can even play with your food, making a bunny out of different sized grapes, an orange and some toothpicks might seem ultra gay and childish but it’ll still make you smile a little when you open your lunch later.
