Raw food diet – Day 2 – Not so hot
Posted by MitchApr 3
Day 1 of this trial was a breeze, I was motivated and positive about the whole deal. I was easily able to stave off any cravings and even attended a drive in movie with the MdotMovieMan and his lady friend without needing any snacks. I did get awfully thirsty at the drive in because the place didn’t have any bottled water. All they had was pop which was very easy to reject. Day 2 of the raw food diet was not quite so smooth. Actually it started off pretty brutal and had me questioning this whole experiment already.
Raw food diet – Day 2
I woke up to my alarm feeling really groggy and I wanted to go back to sleep but couldn’t because I had to pee so badly. Along with my urgent urination came my first turd of the day. It was very soft which is something I am not used to unless I am sick. I guess that’s something I will have to get used to over the course of this month. Through the entire day I had to take frequent trips to the restroom for both number 1 and number 2. In case you were wondering, I pooped about 4 times today.
Nausea
I had just a single banana before jetting off to work (this is not all I ate for the morning, only what I ate BEFORE going to work, I ate a bunch of broccoli shortly after getting to work) and for the first 7 hours of my shift I felt horrible. I was nauseous for nearly 7 hours which was not something that I enjoyed. I also felt like I had come down with some sort of illness. My nose was a bit stuffy and runny and I had a strange tickle in the back of my throat which led to a brief coughing fit. The nausea started to subside after I ate a whole pile of carrots and strawberries about 6 hours into my shift. I was happy to feel a little better by that point because another 6 hours of nausea seemed almost unbearable to me at the time.
Mental Fog
For about as long as the nausea lasted I also was experiencing a strong lack of motivation and a mental fog. I wasn’t concentrating very well and I even forgot my book at home which I usually bring to work to read on my coffee breaks. This didn’t help with the mental fog either since I was stuck reading the newspaper on my breaks. I felt weak and slow for a few hours after waking up. At first I thought this might be because I hadn’t eaten a whole lot yet and proceeded to eat a bunch of broccoli and some mini cucumbers. After eating I felt even worse than before! This was about 2 hours into my shift and I was getting slightly worried about how the rest of the night (I work nights) would progress. I ate a bit of food each time I went for a break but I didn’t eat any large meals at all.
Cravings
About an hour after I started my shift one of my coworkers walked into the lunchroom with some Subway. It smelled and looked soo tasty! If you don’t already know this, I am pretty much a Subway addict. Before starting this raw food experiment I ate Subway nearly every day that I worked because it is close by and it’s delicious and fresh. While watching him eat the sub I started to have cravings. This is probably mostly mental at this point because it’s only the 2nd day on the raw food diet and I caught myself thinking “I can’t have any of that for another 29 days! Damn this is going to be hard!” . Watching the guys at work eat all of their ‘regular’ food, coupled with the way I was feeling caused me to consider dumping this whole idea right off the get-go, but I just continued telling myself “It’s only 30 days, you can do anything for 30 days. I’ve got the entire remainder of my life to eat as much Subway as I want. It’s only 30 days!”
I know the cravings are going to get worse before they get better, considering the way I was thinking already on day 2 I know that this is going to be a big challenge to make it through the full 30 days, please feel free to show your support by commenting on these articles. Your comments will help keep me motivated to see this through to the bitter end.
At one point the MdotMovieMan texted me to see how it was going. I told him how it was going so far and he gave me some encouragement and told me not to give up. He said “How are you going to be able to blog about it if you give up already? Your readers will be disappointed!” I knew he was right and that I would be disappointed in myself too if I threw in the towel this early. I thank him for his constant support in whatever it is that I’m doing. He is a great friend of mine and if you’re interested in checking out his movie review blog you should click here.
I expected that I would experience most of these symptoms but I didn’t think they would show up so soon on only day 2 of this trial. I’m a little worried about how the next 2 weeks will go because I expect the detox symptoms to get stronger for at least a week or two. Raw foodists and other bloggers like Steve Pavlina who have done similar trials all seem to say that the health benefits and the way you feel going into weeks 3 and 4 of this diet are well worth suffering through the initial detox period for. I sure hope they are right! I’ve been reviewing Steve’s 30 days raw trial and it was kind of comforting to see that he experienced very similar symptoms on day 2 of his raw food trial as well, so I guess everything seems to be right on track thus far.
Today I weigh in at 162 lbs for a loss of about 6 lbs in 2 days. That seems like a pretty big drop for such a short time but I expect my weight will fluctuate quite a bit for the first week or two of this trial and will probably stabilize closer to the end of the 30 days. I also expect that much or all of the weight I lose during this experiment will come back shortly after I return to cooked food. My weight has stayed around 170 to 180 lbs for most of my adult life. Even when I was kickboxing and exercising regularly I hardly gained or lost any weight at all, always between 170 and 180 lbs. I’m not doing this to lose weight so it really doesn’t matter much to me if I gain or lose any weight at all, I am only recording my weight for informational purposes during this trial.
That’s all for today! I hope day 3 is better than day 2 was. Wish me luck!

Fingers crossed for you but have you worked out any kind of diet plan? Sounds like you ate a lot of broccoli (a bit hard on the system – did you say you felt worse after eating it at lunch?) and didn’t have any kind of fatty foods (avocado etc). Two really good resources for starting out a raw diet are David Wolfe (Sunfood System) and Frederic Patenaude (fredericpatenaude.com)
I do also have a copy of the menu plan I did for my first week at http://crystalsquest.com/raw-food-update-menu-plan/ – that was based on David Wolfe’s stuff and it worked well (although it’s a LOT of food to get through so I had very little chance for cravings). I’ve read a few things that say the biggest mistake most newbies make is not eating enough raw food when they start, and I certainly had a huge trolley of food from the menu plan. I’ve learnt since that it’s because modern convenience foods are concentrated, while raw stuff isn’t, so your body will need more of it, although equally it won’t need as much water once you’ve gone through the detox.
Good luck,
Crystal

Wow took me like 5 minutes to figure out where the comment button was haha. I have been reading this site of yours and I enjoy it. More people should comment on what you put up – but at least you know I am here ;p. I think I have much in common with you actually hehe. I made the full switch today to vegetarian only so today is my day 1. I’m trying not to have any pre conieved ideas in my head about day 2 – to me the whole thing isn’t really a big deal, although it could be easier finding good food. I also don’t own a TV or a microwave. I don’t drink tap water, don’t brush my teeth with flouride, and don’t use an unnatural underarm stick.
If you make a big deal about it it’s gonna be harder for you. I just go about my day…minus the meats and bullshit thrown at you all day every day.

Thank you for the comments ! I will check out your links.
Today I ate a lot more food and I’m starting to experiment with some recipes and things. I have a book by David Wolfe but it’s on superfoods not the raw food diet. I do have another book by Natasha Kyssa about Raw Food Detoxing.
I am going to write my day 3 report right away so check back in a couple of hours!
