Over the last 3 months I have worked my way from drinking coffee with 2 sugar and 2 cream to drinking it black with no cream or sweeteners. I am going to share how and why I decided to drink my coffee black.
I am not going to explain why you shouldn’t drink coffee. I think we all know that caffine is a drug and you can become addicted to it and it can cause problems if taken too often or in too high of a dose. The real problem with most coffee drinkers is that they add sweeteners and creamers to their coffee like I used to. That being said, coffee is a better alternative than energy drinks and this is how I moved to drinking my coffee without any sweeteners or cream.
Why should you drink your coffee black?
- Very low in calories, only about 2 calories per 8oz cup of black coffee
- Coffee is full of anti-oxidants
- No sugar, aspartame, nutrasweet, or other harmful sweeteners
- No cream, no processed fats or calories
- Coffee reduces the risk of parkinsons disease
- Coffee has many health benefits and can protect against diabetes, gallstones, alzheimers, and athsma
How to gradually learn to drink black coffee:
If you drink coffee every day you should definitely drink it black. It’s hard to learn to like the taste of black coffee, or so it might seem. What I did to learn to like black coffee was easy. The real problem with most coffee drinkers is that they add sweeteners and creamers to their coffee like I used to.
Sweeteners like sugar, and aspartame are linked to all sorts of health problems! They are very dangerous and should be limited in your diet if you want to stay healthy. Artificial sweeteners like aspartame, splenda, nutra sweet, and others are by far the worst. They are addictive, make you fatter, and even can cause brain lesions a whole array of disease. For more information on that, watch Sweet Misery.
The most important part is finding a good coffee. I used to drink Tim Horton’s coffee all the time and I was having terrible heart burn so I switched to fresh ground beans, Starbucks house blend, but I recently found a much better alternative to the evil Starbucks. NutriCafe Immune System Boosting coffee from EnerHealth Botanicals is really good coffee. (So good that I added them as a new affiliate and recommended product).
- Fresh ground beans
Beans last longer than ground coffee on the shelf. You decide how coarse or fine you like your coffee ground. Fresh ground coffee tastes better.
- Pure filtered water
Enerhealth also has the same filter that I’ve been using for over a year now, the Big Berkey with PF2 fluoride filters. You don’t want to have all the gross stuff that’s in tap water to distort the flavor of your coffee! The filtered water also helps ensure a better pH of your coffee, to prevent heart burn.
- Low Acidity Coffee
I also have a problem getting heartburn and gut rot from bad coffee, so I really like low acidity to my coffee which I find is better in the new beans from EnerHealth Botanicals. This helps prevent the gut rot and terrible heart burn.
- Organic, Non Genetically Modified (GMO)
GMO foods are dangerous and are not as healthy or nutritious as organic, non GMO foods. Organic foods have many benefits for your health including higher anti-oxidant levels and better flavors and no pesticides. Most people don’t realize how much pesticides are used on non organic large commercial coffee operations.
Ween yourself off of the sweeteners and the cream
After you have a good coffee to drink, then you must begin to ween yourself off of the creamers and the sugar or sweetener. Begin by trying a coffee with half of what you normally put in for sugar, with the same amount of cream as usual. If you can drink that, or it tastes too creamy, then next time take the half sugar but also half the cream. If you can’t handle that, add more cream next time but less than usual. You want to gradually bring down the sugars first and the creamers after. I found that the easiest way to get it down to neither of each. I don’t know if there is a reason for this, it’s just how I found it worked best for me because without the sugar the drink tastes too creamy to me.
Continue dropping the sweetener, to a level approaching none, until you can drink coffee with no sweetener and just a little bit of cream. Once you are comfortable with coffee and a bit of cream, get rid of the cream! It’s easy, but it could take a period of several months to adjust your tastes, so do it slowly, just ease into less sweeteners first, they are the worst part, and then follow with the cream. I found this method adjusted my tastes until I now can drink my coffee completely black.
